Pennsylvania to resume Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, extra $300 per week

Harrisburg, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) announced Friday that the payments for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program in the new federal CARES Act extension are resuming. The Dept. of L&I says that PUA assists workers who lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and are not typically eligible for other unemployment compensation programs. This includes gig workers, freelancers, and self-employed workers. Department officials say those applying for PUA need to know the following information: You can begin filing for the additional 11 claim weeks today, January 22.

Wolf signs law to yank toll violators' vehicle registrations

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A measure to help the Pennsylvania Turnpike recover more unpaid tolls was signed into law Thursday, legislation that could trigger the suspension of thousands of vehicle registrations early next year. Gov. Tom Wolf gave final approval to legislation aimed at getting owners or operators of some 25,000 vehicles to pay their overdue bills for turnpike travel. After the law takes effect in two months, the process will start with the Turnpike Commission notifying registrants they are seeking to have their registrations suspended.

Woman pierced by flying shrapnel dies in Michigan firework explosion, 9 others injured

More than 100 COVID-19 cases reported at SCI Huntingdon causing spike in county's numbers
