Amy Arcurio named Greater Johnstown superintendent
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A new superintendent has been named in the Greater Johnstown School District. It's the first permanent superintendent since November 2016.
It was a unanimous decision to appoint current Assistant Superintendent Amy Arcurio to the position. She replaces substitute Superintendent Frank Frontino.
The Greater Johnstown School District has had substitute superintendents since November 2016, when then-Superintendent James Cekada went on paid sabbatical leave.
After his retirement this summer, Frontino was appointed substitute superintendent and the Pennsylvania School Boards Association led the search for a permanent leader.
Free COVID-19 shots available at Bedford County fair
BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A family fun tradition continues this year in Bedford County after a year-long hiatus due to COVID-19, the Bedford County Fair.
Monday July 26th admission is $5 for Family Day and free for any Military Personnel or Veterans with a proper ID. The fun kicks off at the Bedford County Fairgrounds at 9 am and goes until 11 pm with a lot to checkout from rides to 4-H members showcasing their animals, a petting zoo, chainsaw artists and more.
Luke Combs' concert success at Beaver Stadium opens doors for more major events
Officials with Penn State say it takes time to find the right artist to perform at one of the biggest venues in America. After seeing the success Luke Combs had at Beaver Stadium on Saturday night, they say they are going to try and do this more often.
“Beaver Stadium is iconic, and a great place to see football, and now a concert,” said Bryce Jordan Center General Manager Al Karosas.
PA school district creates separate bathrooms for what gender students identify with
Bucks County, Pennsylvania (WCAU) — On Monday night, a school district in Bucks County, Pennsylvania voted 5 to 4 to provide separate bathroom facilities to enable students to use facilities for the gender they identify with.
Many people in the audience were upset by the vote as there was an overwhelming amount of people who spoke publicly who want the policy to stay, but now that will change.
Under the new policy, transgender students will be allowed to use a bathroom of the gender they identify with.
WJAC-TV anchor Tim Rigby, brother, recovering after successful kidney transplant
PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — This Christmas Eve, our family here at WJAC wants to share wonderful news regarding our friend and colleague, Tim Rigby.
As many know, Tim underwent kidney transplant surgery Thursday in Pittsburgh.
Tim's brother, State Rep. Jim Rigby, was a perfect match and was cleared by doctors to donate his kidney to Tim.
Both Tim and his brother, Jim, are doing great.
In fact, Tim said it is unbelievable how much better he feels already.
'Heartbroken' officials announce death of baby elephant Tsuni who lived in Somerset County
The Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium announced Thursday that it's two-year-old elephant calf, Tsuni, has passed away after a sudden and brief battle with elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV), according to a press release.
In a statement, the zoo stated that EEHV in Tsuni, who resided at the International Conservation Center in Fairhope with her herd, was detected through routine blood tests February 8, although the calf displayed no visible clinical signs.
Indiana man fled scene of fatal Route 119 crash; was found intoxicated at hotel
Indiana County, PA (WJAC) — State police in Indiana County say a local man is behind bars for reportedly causing a fatal crash along Route 119 late Thursday night.
Troopers say first responders were dispatched to the two-vehicle crash scene, located in Center Township, around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to the affidavit, the driver of one of the vehicles, later identified as 28-year-old Elias Jimenez, of Indiana, had reportedly fled the scene prior to the troopers' arrival.

Somerset Co. severe weather exercise held coincidentally on first heavy snowfall of season
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — It was a coincidence that the Somerset County Department of Emergency Services hosted a severe weather drill on the same day heavy snow fell for the first time this season.
Tuesday morning, first responders and safety officials in Somerset County gathered to practice how they'd respond to a winter weather-related emergency.
"Fortunately, we don't have to use the Emergency Operations Center a lot, but we definitely want to bring everybody in at least two times a year to do it.
