Severe storms kill 4 in Houston, cause widespread power outages and risk of tornadoes
HOUSTON (AP) — Fast-moving thunderstorms pummeled southeastern Texas for the second time this month, killing at least four people, blowing out windows in high-rise buildings, downing trees and knocking out power to more than 900,000 homes and businesses in the Houston area.
Officials urged residents to keep off roads following Thursday's storms, as many were impassable and traffic lights were out. The storm system moved through swiftly, but flood watches and warnings remained Friday for Houston and areas to the east.
Big Run man found with child porn after sending messages to group posing as 'teen'
Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say a Jefferson County man is behind bars after dozens of child pornography images were allegedly found on his cellphones.
Police say in March, 51-year-old Arthur Kennedy, of Big Run, reportedly sent a nude picture of himself to members of the 814 Pred Hunters group, who were posing as a 13-year-old girl.
When confronted by police, Kennedy allegedly admitted to possessing several images of nude young girls.
Gabby Douglas sparks controversy during USA national anthem
RIO DE JANIERO —Gabby Douglas was the center of criticism for Team USA as her posture during the playing of the national anthem drew heat from those on social media.
Douglas and her teammates had just received their gold medals in the women’s team all-around gymnastics competition when the national anthem began playing. Her teammates Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurien Hernandez all put their right hand over their heart as the anthem played, while Douglas stood in attention.
High school soccer player comes home after brain bleed, 3 surgeries
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Jase McDowell, a high school soccer player from South Carolina who suffered a severe brain bleed during a game in March, is finally spending some time at home.
“I’m mainly just missing my house and my friends and my family," the 15-year-old said.
Following his injury, Jase went through three surgeries.
“I remember that day going to get food before the game, and after that, I don’t remember anything else at all,"
Inflation shows sign of cooling, but experts pour cold water on hope of interest rate cuts
(TND) — New government reports point to a cooler economy and possibly cooler inflation.
But experts say it’s not time yet for Americans squeezed by high prices and high borrowing costs to exhale.
Stagnating progress on inflation has wiped multiple interest rate cuts off the board for this year.
WalletHub Founder and CEO Odysseas Papadimitriou said Americans shouldn’t hold onto “false hope that rate cuts are coming.”
“Rate cuts are not coming anytime soon,” he said Friday.
Nail salon pays $1.75M to woman who lost leg after pedicure
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman whose leg had to be amputated because of an infection after a pedicure has reached a $1.75 million settlement with the nail salon, her attorney said.
An employee at Tammy’s Nails 2 in Tampa cut Clara Shellman’s foot during a pedicure in September 2018, the Tampa Bay Times reported. The cut became infected and spread quickly, partly because Shellman had severe peripheral arterial disease, a circulatory condition that causes narrowed blood vessels to reduce blood flow to the limbs, the newspaper said.
Pennsylvania senators push to end daylight saving time due to cost and health concerns
Some legislators in the Pennsylvania Senate are trying to put a stop to the practice of day light saving.
Daylight saving time was first enacted as a legal requirement by the Uniform Time Act of 1966. Motivated by transportation improvements and arguments about energy saving– according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Since then, studies by the National Bureau of Economic Research have shown the opposite. We spoke with PA state senator Cris Dush (R-25) about senate resolution 65 which aims to make daylight saving time permanent.
Centre Co. woman jailed after attacking two people during argument
Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A Moshannon woman is behind bars in Centre County, accused of strangling another person over an argument about a cowboy hat.
Police say that on Saturday, 33-year-old Amber Shay was reportedly drinking alcohol at her Snow Shoe Township home when the argument began.
Shay is accused of shoving the victim onto a bed before ripping off a cowboy hat and choking the victim.
Police say when Shay’s husband intervened, another argument began.
